Friends
Maybe you once worked together, went jogging together or even partied late into the night together, but a chronic pain condition changed that. While you may not be able to enjoy all of the activities you once did with your friends, you can maintain important friendships. It just takes some creativity and planning. Here are some ideas:
Seek flexibilityIf you can’t imagine fitting another activity – or the energy to do it – into your day, ask a friend to join you at something you’re already doing. For example, if you know you’ll have a long wait at the doctor’s office, ask if she’ll join you. You can spend the time catching up and the time will fly. If you don’t have the energy for a trip to mall, ask if she might meet you at the supermarket. Instead of looking for the perfect pair of shoes or shade of you can look for the plumpest grapes or reddest strawberries. Plus having a supportive friend along can help you make healthier food choices.

Eat inNot up to dinner and movie out? Invite a friend to your place for pizza or Chinese delivered. Follow with favorite movie on TV during which you can talk, laugh out loud and enjoy microwave popcorn -- with no dirty looks from fellow movie goers or $30 trips to the concession stand.
|
Think smallIf you used to host dinner parties, consider a party of two or three –and ask guests to bring one item toward the meal.

Make it a group eventNeed help moving furniture, wrapping gifts, or trimming your Christmas tree? Invite a friend or two -- or three -- to help. Serve refreshments.

Call if you can't visitIf you don’t have the energy to plan a date, it’s never been easier to stay in touch by phone. Text her just to ask how she is doing. If you see something that makes you think of her, take a picture and send it to her. Give her a call. Not up to a long phone conversation? Call five or 10 minutes before there is something you have to do and let her know up front. (“Hi. The dentist will call me back in just a minute, but there was something I just had to tell you” or “Hi. I am in the shop getting my oil changed. I only have a few minutes, but I was thinking of you and wanted to give you a call.”)

Save upIf there is an upcoming event with friends or family that you don’t want to miss, budget your energy. Limit other activities that week and take a nap a few hours before your outing. When the time comes, drive yourself or go with someone who doesn’t mind leaving early if you need to.
